Grafana: dashboards, alerts, and PromQL in operational investigations
Opsphere now queries a connected Grafana instance during an operational investigation. Twelve read-only tools cover organization health, datasources, dashboards, firing alerts, annotations, PromQL through a Grafana datasource, and Synthetic Monitoring check definitions. The module stays disabled until that tenant configures credentials. Grafana remains the source of those results.
PromQL runs through the Grafana datasource proxy and needs the Prometheus datasource UID for that tenant. It complements the existing direct Prometheus tools. Synthetic Monitoring tools return the check definition, not historical probe results. Opsphere is read-only by default and does not copy Grafana telemetry into another store.
What changes
The integrations hub already lists Grafana for dashboards, alert rules, datasource health, and annotation events. The read-only tool set behind that listing is now available: twelve tools, off until the tenant configures credentials.
How it works
A tenant supplies a Grafana base URL and an API token, or a service account token. PromQL also needs the UID of the Prometheus datasource in Grafana. Synthetic Monitoring tools need a separate Synthetic Monitoring API URL and access token. Grafana supplies the data. Opsphere queries it for the investigation.
- grafana_status checks organization health.
- grafana_datasources_list and grafana_datasource_health list datasources and report health.
- grafana_dashboards_search, grafana_dashboard_get, and grafana_dashboard_panel_promql search dashboards, open one, and read PromQL from a panel.
- grafana_alert_rules_list, grafana_alerts_firing, and grafana_annotations_list cover alert rules, firing alerts, and annotations.
- grafana_prom_query runs PromQL through the Grafana datasource proxy.
- grafana_sm_checks_list and grafana_sm_check_get return Synthetic Monitoring check definitions.
Why it matters
During an investigation, a team can read the dashboards, firing alerts, and annotations Grafana already holds, and run PromQL through that Grafana datasource, next to other connected signals. Grafana remains the source of that data.
Limits and requirements
Opsphere is read-only by default. The module is disabled per tenant until credentials are set. Source systems remain authoritative for the underlying operational data.
- grafana_prom_query requires a Prometheus datasource UID.
- Synthetic Monitoring tools require a Synthetic Monitoring API URL and access token.
- Synthetic Monitoring tools return the check definition, not historical probe results.
